Who We Are

The Gateway Outdoor Expo and Gateway Outdoor Summit are presented by River City Outdoors and Terrain Magazine and guided by our shared mission: to make outdoor recreation in St. Louis and the Midwest accessible, inclusive, and transformative for all.

River City Outdoors (RCO) is a nonprofit foundation that builds community through programs, advocacy, education, partnerships, and resources that help people get outside, learn outdoor skills, and explore safely. Focused on reaching those with limited access, RCO works with trusted community organizations to break down barriers and foster a welcoming, equitable, and sustainable outdoor ecosystem.

Launched in 2014, Terrain is a nonprofit publication that celebrates outdoor adventure, discovery, and culture through storytelling and editorial content that inspires people to engage with nature and their communities. Terrain produces a free print and digital magazine, online content, and participatory events.

Through the Expo, we provide hands-on experiences, gear showcases, and interactive activities for families and adventurers. Through the Summit, we bring together leaders, advocates, and educators to share ideas, collaborate, and advance the future of outdoor recreation in the Midwest.

Together, RCO and Terrain are building a stronger regional outdoor community — empowering people to enjoy, protect, and connect through the outdoors for generations to come.

Our Community Impact

River City Outdoors leads the Thrive Outside St. Louis community, a coalition of 100+ local organizations working together to create repeated, meaningful outdoor experiences for youth and underserved communities. 

By removing barriers to access and fostering inclusive, engaging outdoor opportunities, Thrive Outside supports stronger connections to nature, better wellbeing, and a city where everyone can enjoy the outdoors.
